Deter slugs and snails - try these ideas

After all the wet weather we have been suffering in the last few days it is time to turn our attention to the problem of slugs and snails perforating our precious plants. These ideas are not 100% but may deter some of the little pests.

  1. Try lifting potted plants off the ground as shown and you could also smear some grease around the bottom of the pot (Vaseline or WD40)or double sided sticky tape. These containers are available on the website.

  2. Slugs and snails seem to dislike garlic so make a spray to use every 2 weeks on a dry evening. The smell when you are making it is very strong, you have been warned!! Crush 2 Bulbs Garlic and boil in 2 pints of water for 4 minutes. Strain and make it up to 2 pints again. Dilute one tablespoon in 4 litres of water. Might also work with roses but I have not tried it yet.

  3. Sit the pots in a saucer filled with grit make sure it has drainage holes

  4. Go out at night and pick them off - not a pleasant task but effective.
